Back on the Bow River attack

As winter slowly melts away, I finally got my jet boat back out for its 2024 maiden voyage. I had the boat repaired for cracked welds at Grey Wolf Industries in Millet, Alberta. Jesse did a fantastic job and I highly recommend his work to anyone needing repairs done to their boat. My girlfriend and I drove up on a Saturday, and had the boat out fishing the next day, Easter Sunday.

I have taken my girlfriend out shore fishing several times over the winter, but this was going to be her first time out on the boat. To say she was extremely excited would be an understatement! We tried to get to bed early Saturday night, but all that excitement made it hard to sleep. You all know how that goes! We got a decent rest and made our way to Policemans Flats boat launch for 9AM. It was quiet out there, with only a few trailers in the parking lot. We rigged up our rods with those high quality, Robertson Tackle lures and made our way down river in search of peace, quiet and of course, those epic Bow River trout.

I have caught many, many fish from this river, so getting my girlfriend some fish was the goal of the day. I caught the first amazing brown, and decided to stop fishing and let her experience those strong, scrappy fish all to herself. We arrived at a spot East of the golf course, and I pulled the boat off to the shore of the river. She was casting with ease, and grace letting the rod do the work. After only two casts, she caught this amazing brown pictured here. A few more casts and she had another brown smash her Pink Panther lure. We were both exceptionally excited and happy she caught these epic trout. Several more casts and we decided to move locations.

Off we went downriver into a deep corner of the river, where normally there are monster trout. Once again, I pulled the boat off the river letting her cast into prime water. It was not long and she was battling a gigantic Bow River “Rocket” (Rainbow Trout) She battled this beast perfectly and guided it into my awaiting net like a pro. We snapped a few quick pics before gently letting the fish go to be caught another day.

Several more trout were caught along our journey and we had a very amazing day out there. I think Charlene, my girlfriend landed eight fish, and I was able to put five in the net. We both had a fantastic day out there sport fishing the mighty Bow River. The boat repairs were done perfectly and I could not be happier.

Brown Trout Fishing With the Robertson Tackle “Green Ghost” Crankbait

Taking the Green Ghost to Brown Town

With fantastic weather in February, I head out to an inner city location in search of the rivers finest Brown Trout specimens. In this video I am using my own lure, the Robertson Tackle Green Ghost. The bright green pattern of this lure is great for deep, overwintering holes like I am fishing here.

The color is ideal for deeper water applications with low light penetration down deep in the hole. The deeper the water, the less light penetration there is, so it is important for me to use a lure with bright colors!

It is also important that the lure has rattling capabilities, which all the lures I sell have. The combination of color, combined with the rattle help me land several fish on my afternoon on the water.

Thank you for watching the video and please like the video and subscribe if you have not already. I will be doing many more YouTube vidoes this season, and sharing those here on the Blog. I appreciate you reading and tuning into the Bow River Blog YouTube channel.

Thank you,

~Mike

The river is my church.

Lately I have been fishing the river more than usual! Often times, I find solace near water when times are stressful. For me, even standing near water gives me great comfort and the water always seems to ease my stressors. During these challenging times in life, I find myself standing on the rivers edge watching the birds overhead; normally crows or the odd Bald Eagle catching flight, gliding on the strong winter breeze. I find my problems vanish away here, seemingly into mid-air as my thoughts drift away towards the fish. What lure I will start to use and why. What color of lure should I grab first for the water conditions? What speed of retrieve should I use for the current water conditions? The more I think about these things, the less I think about whatever problems I may have currently. I find great comfort in that, even if I don’t catch any fish. It’s like the river just magically takes it all away!

Lately, the weather has been amazing which has enabled me to get out more often this month (December.) Normally the weather is on the minus side of the thermostat, and open water fishing on the Bow River only happens during a chinook. This year has been exceptionally mild, and I have been landing some amazing fish once again, fishing inner city Calgary.

We are so fortunate to have such a valuable resource in the Bow River running right through our beautiful city. Where many folks must drive an hour, or several hours to fish, I only have to drive ten minutes to epic trout fishing! It’s a blessing my happy place is close to home; where I can go and reflect on life, make important decisions and be at inner peace no matter what curveballs life throws at me. Most often times, the fish are just the bonus, just being near the river, the sound of the moving water brings my copious joy and deep inner peace.

Where do you go when life gets tough. Where is your happy place where you seek answers or peace? Feel free to leave a comment on the post here.

Thank you,

~Mike
