Fishing The Bow River For Brown Trout

My friend Andrew and I were out searching for some Bow River trout’s recently. I have been cooped up inside working and just could not turn down the offer to fish. We walked for few miles and selected some prime real estate to fish. I wanted to shoot some video footage for you to see what it is I do when I string up my line. I know most of you already do this and know this information but some people who are new to fishing can benefit from this short video.

Andrew and I started to fish and we were surprised to find we could not catch any fish. It was not for experience or lack of knowledge, just no fish were holding in this area at that time. So we walked down the river to find the Brown trout we were hoping to catch. We came to a deep pocket of water where I have hooked fish before and I launched my minnow spinner far across the river. The first few attempts were unsuccessful and after a few more, fish on baby. I tried to reel him in but he was very sly and smart and spit my hook as fast as he ate it. It was a nice brown trout and I was a little frustrated as this was my first fish I had a chance to land. We fished here a few more minutes and moved further downstream.

I was looking to fish a long stretch of water where two branches of the river converge. We arrived and just my second cast and I was rewarded with a beautiful brown that fought like Mike Tyson for a few rounds until I was able to land it. Powerful bruiser he was. Andrew hooked and landed a few nice rainbows and I continued to hammer some sweet browns.

What an awesome day on the Bow River once again. Please watch the video attached to this post and click HD to watch the video in High Definition. Hopefully I can get back out to the river soon and hammer some more big hogs very soon!

Well thats a bit better eh, how did it feel to get out fishing again? Just a few quick questions if u dont mind, were u using a brook trout rapala, and was that below the Hw2 bridge? Also have u ever tried the Rapala Tail Dancer, or Minnow Rap. They looked promising when I was at the tackel store and have pulled in a few fish but nothing like the Countdowns.

Thanks for your advice, and its good to see u out fishing the Bow.

that was a good day, and one thing your readers may want to know is that we only go out for 3 or 4 hours and fish a few holes, then go home. That is so good for me, as i don’t overfish the bow in the spots i go to, and the wife lets me go when i want, it is a win win….lol ,,,,but i must say that fishing always takes my mind off of the everyday stressors of work, when i am on the river , whether it is in a boat or just on the shore, when i am done, even if i do not catch anything, i feel pretty good….just thought i would mention that

    Hey Mike,

Love the site!!! I re-caught the fishing bug this year and havent been able to shake it. Thanks you for all the info this site has provided. I have a question about fishing the Bow this time of year:

When fishing holes such as 22x & southland I am pulling in weeds on every cast. I have landed one 21″ brown but the weeds are getting to me. I am using a cd-9 most of the time but have tried jerks as well. Is the a technique I should know to prevent from reeling in tons of weeds all of the time?

    Thanks John

  2. Hey Guys, sorry for the slow response. Sebastian, its always good for me to get out fishing, its good for my soul. I have not used the tail dancers but I know if you did you would hook some serious fish with them. The minnow raps also look great but I have yet to fish them. I should give them a try soon. Yes we were just a little below the 22x bridge.

Thanks for the comment and your questions Sebastian, hope to see you out on the river also.

    ~Mike.

  3. Andrew my friend, its always good to fish with you. We need to hear the rushing of the water instead of the pounding of an air hammer more then we get a chance too. Sure glad we can hook into those big hogs in the Bow River while we are there.

I hope to see many more days out on the river with you.

    Thanks,

    ~Mike.

  5. Hey John, glad to hear you are fishing once again, fun hey !!!!

In regards to your question, I try and keep my rod tip up high in the air to prevent the countdowns from diving too deep down and picking up weeds every cast. At this time of the year its usually clean as the cold has washed all the weeds away, but seeing as we have not seen the cold yet there is still tons of weeds on the shorlines and even on the bottom of the Bow River.

Try usuing Rapalas like the original floater as these lures don’t dive as deep as the Countdowns and still work as good when the water is shallow and there is lots of weeds.

Thanks for your comment and hope to hear from you again soon,

    ~Mike
