Tackle- Berkley Frenzy

I am Happy to report that the fishing on the Bow River has not slowed down much in the past couple of weeks. I was out fishing all weekend and am proud to report that there are still many huge fish being caught. My best this weekend was a 25 inch rainbow on Saturday. I offered to take my brother and law Dean out fishing as he has never floated the Bow River with me yet.

What a trip we had let me tell you, Dean did very well with the Rapalas as well as the Panther Martin’s. His biggest fish of the day came on the Rapala rainbow trout pattern. It was 21 inches long and probably weighed in at around 4-5 pounds. His comment to me as we were fishing the Bow was “this is definitely the way to fish”. I would agree with you Dean, You just cover so much water that you are bound to catch fish that are massive.

hi mike! i managed to find a good deal on a boat and am now floating the river, went out tonight but didnt have much luck, more less probably spent more time trying to learn the river and figure out my path back up river. anyway are ther any tips you can give me on the best way to cast toward shore from the boat. eg. up river down river or across. i also purchased a rainbow colored x rap and the salesman requested one that is about 3.5 inches long, is that too big?

  2. Awesome, congrats on the new boat. I hope you have many years of fun with it. Spending time on the river and getting to know it is the first step in finding good places to fish and therefore catching trout. I spent many hours out on the water just exploring. Once that part is over you will catch fish on a consistent basis if you learn where to find them.

Here is a quick tip for you, hopefully you still have a little cash left over after the purchase of your boat. If so hire a guide to take you out on the river. I am probably free next week or you can hire someone else if you like, either way you will get to see all the spots on the river where fishing is prime. Also you can get valuable information from a guide that knows the river intimately. You will actually SEE how to present your lure/spinner to trout. You will SEE first hand how far to cast into shore and in what direction. How fast to retrieve and so on. Let the guide know you are new to the sport and he will accommodate that into the trip.

As per your fishing lure question, it is NOT too big for this time of the year as the Rainbow Trout fry probably match that size by now. Early in the spring it may be a little to big as the fry are just hatching and are small. In the winter it its the perfect size as the big fish are looking for a big meal. I can tell you that the color will absolutely work well for you. Depth of the water will play a factor in what size of crank bait you will need as some dive deeper than others. Keep that in mind.
